Title: The e-Bug Project in France

Aim of Intervention: Raising awareness among children, helping them to adopt suitable attitudes and behavior towards infection transmission and treatment starting from childhood.

Target Population: Fourth and fifth forms in Junior High School & 6th and 9th forms in Senior High School.

Target Place: France

Time Period:  Launched since September 2009.

Intervention Tool(s): Subject matter covered by the e-Bug Project was best suited to the following national science curricula:

Junior High School: 4th and 5th forms (9-10 year olds):
a)      Unity and diversity within the living world
b)      Health education and the human body
c)      Environmental education.

Senior High School: 6th form (11-12 year olds)
a)      Diversity, interdependency and unity of the living world
b)      Practices related to human food

Senior High School: 9th form (14-15 year olds)
a)      Human responsibility: health and environment
b)      Infection risk and protection of the human body

Technology: e-bug software

Results: Positive response and increasing orders for the software from both students and teachers. Ongoing evaluation into the effectiveness of the program is still underway as long as funding continues to come in.

Costs: Staff cost, printing, distribution

Personal Reflection: A great way to incorporate essential health information into the school curricula through the use of interactive software. However, in Indonesia, considering that most public schools lack computers for students, more funding would be needed to first equip schools with computers, and next, for teachers to receive training on guiding their students into utilizing the software. This intervention would also require support from the Ministry of Health and other national and provincial health associations. This program relies heavily on funding and endorsement as this is an institutional implementation plan.
